Times Table Island

English · Türkçe · Español · Deutsch · Français · Русский

Times Table Island is a times-table game for children aged 5 to 9. Ember, Mochi, Bolt, Luna, Pip, Yuki, Kai, Koko, Fizz and Inky help your child climb ten worlds, from the beach to the stars and on to a pirate cove, one round at a time, counting real objects in equal groups. Along the way come division, sharing with leftovers, the trickiest facts and story problems. Here are answers to common questions from grown-ups.

How do I open the grown-ups area?

Tap the grey cog at the top of the map. A short check asks you to tap three numbers written as words, for example "Tap seven, then two, then nine." It is there so children don't wander in by accident. The grown-ups area shows your child's progress and settings, and has the Full Game, Restore Purchases, Reset progress, and the list of children.

Can more than one child play?

Yes. Up to four children can play on one device, each with their own map, stars and collections. In the grown-ups area, under Children, tap Add a child and choose a picture and an optional nickname. When there is more than one child, the app asks "Who's playing?" when it opens; tap the child's picture at the top of the map to switch.

What is free, and what is the Full Game?

The first three worlds, Pet Beach, Monster Bakery and Space Rescue, are free, and they teach every times table from ×1 to ×10. Free Practice is free for ×1 to ×5. The free version shows an occasional ad between rounds.

The Full Game is a one-time purchase that opens the other seven worlds (×11 and ×12, review, division, the trickiest facts and story problems), every table in Free Practice, and removes the ads. It is shared with your family through Family Sharing. Buy it in the grown-ups area under Full Game, or when your child taps a locked world and asks you. On a new device, tap Restore Purchases.

My child can't answer by voice

Voice answers need the microphone and speech recognition permissions, and a device that can recognise speech on its own. If the microphone button is missing, check that voice answers are on in the grown-ups area, and that Times Table can use the microphone and speech recognition in the iPhone or iPad Settings. Speech is understood on the device and never recorded.

What is the Trick Book?

The Tricks button on the map opens a book of ways to remember the times tables: turning a fact around, doubling, counting in fives, ten take one away, and more. A page opens when your child reaches its table on the map. A character explains it out loud, then three questions let your child try it. Nothing in the book counts for stars, and nothing is recorded. If the game plays in Turkish, Spanish, German, French or Russian, update the narrator's voice in the grown-ups area so the new pages are read by the narrator rather than the device's own voice.

What happens at the top of the island?

Finishing the very last round, Pirate Cove's Challenge, makes your child a Times Table Champion. A celebration plays on the island's summit with all the characters, a golden crown appears on your child's picture, and a trophy at the top of the map plays the celebration again. Your child gets a certificate with their name, stars and the date. In the grown-ups area, under your child's progress, Champion's certificate lets you share or print it. Rounds opened with Unlock all tables don't count until they are played.

What are the medals?

Medals reward learning, not time spent. There is one for every star in a world, one for all 354 stars, one for each world's collection turned all golden (replaying rounds turns items golden), and Times Table Master for knowing all 78 facts for sure, as shown in the grown-ups' 12 × 12 grid. They are on the first page of the collection: tap the count at the top right of the map, then the gold medal. Finishing each world's Challenge also gets a short celebration.

Can my child skip the early tables?

Yes. Turn on Unlock all tables in the grown-ups area to open every round on the map.

How do I start over?

Tap Reset progress in the grown-ups area. This clears stars, facts and collections and keeps your settings. It can't be undone.

Privacy

Progress stays on your devices and in your own iCloud backup (which you can turn off in the grown-ups area), and nothing about your child is collected or tracked. Read the full privacy policy.

Credits

The handwriting reader in Free Practice learned to read digits from the MNIST database of handwritten digits, created by Yann LeCun and Corinna Cortes, who hold its copyright. It is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence.

Changes: during training, copies of the digits were shifted, turned, resized and given other pen widths, and mixed with digits drawn for this app. The original files were not changed, and the app contains none of the images, only what the reader learned from them. The reader runs on the device; nothing your child writes leaves it. The same credit is in the app, under Acknowledgements in the grown-ups area.
